United Studies Alumni Spotlight - Elene from Spain

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF

My name is Elene and I'm 17 years old. Although I was born in China, I live in Spain since I was one years old. Some of my hobbies are traveling, dancing and watching films.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXCHANGE YEAR IN THE US

I was an exchange student during the school year 2018-2019 in Kansas. I was consider a Senior even though I took Junior classes. My host family had 3 girls (younger than me) and a boy (older than me), which was so much fun as in Spain I only have one sister. From the first day, they made me feel part of the family.

The high school I attended was small and it had a lot of fun classes. My favorite part was going to football and basketball games with my friends. My life in the US was like I was in a movie.

HOW DID YOUR YEAR IN THE US AFFECT YOUR LIFE NOW?

The year I spent in the US taught me a different way of living, a whole different world. My life there was very different from my life in Spain. It helped me to go out of my comfort zone.

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT LIVING IN THE US?

The thing that surprised me the most was how similar the life in the US and the movies is.

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF LIVING IN THE US?

What I learnt about myself was that I'm able to adapt to new circumstances better than I thought.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE FUTURE EXCHANGE STUDENTS?

My advice is to go with an open mind and try to fit in the culture as much as possible. Also try to say yes to the plans.
