United Studies Student of the Week spotlight - Giorgia from Italy

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXCHANGE YEAR IN KANSAS

My name is Giorgia, I'm from Italy and I was an exchange student this school year in Kansas. I'm a simple girl and who love to travel and learn new things. My other passions are art and photography. Being an exchange student has allowed me to make my dreams come true because it gave me the opportunity to build beautiful relationships, such as the one with my friends and my American family, also it has allowed me to know and love another culture that is different from mine.

HOW DOES LIFE IN KANSAS COMPARE TO ITALY?

Living in a big city (in Italy), I have always been used to the noise of so many people on the street and a chaotic life. In Kansas my life has changed because I feel I have come into contact more with nature and with people and I really enjoyed it.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO ON AN EXCHANGE YEAR?

I decided to live a year abroad when I was pretty young. My mom was an exchange student 30 years ago, she used to tell me all her adventures with her foreign friends and when 6 years ago her whole group met in Paris, France, and I saw how despite not having seen each other for years their friendship had remained wonderful, I was sure: I wanted to become an exchange student too.

I feel that if I hadn't left on August 2nd of last year my life wouldn't be the same now. This experience made me grow and understand the most important values like the love of a family, the smile of a friend and the fact that if you want something at any costs you can do it.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU MOST ABOUT LIFE IN THE US?

Living in the united states for a year, I was struck by many things that i will never forget. One of them is the curiosity and the fun questions that every person I meet asks me. I really loved that people were so interested to know me and my culture, this gave me the strength to overcome difficult moments and to give my best.

HOW DID COVID-19 IMPACT YOUR EXCHANGE YEAR?

The coronavirus was taking control of the situation in my country and I was forced to go back home. It was not easy and the flight was pretty hard and stressful for me. Although I never could have foreseen something like that, I am sure this thing also made me grow and now I'm fine because I know that I have not said goodbye to Kansas and my family because when everything will be over I will go back there and I will do everything that is not i had time to try. I want to see it only like a break from my year abroad and not as a conclusion.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE FUTURE EXCHANGE STUDENTS?

If I could give advice to my generation it would be: leave, take that plane, try new things, new emotions and when you have sad moments think about when you are lucky to be able to live such an experience and how much, when you have to go home, you will miss it even the smallest things. Traveling allows you to learn, learning allows you to be able to make your dreams come true, so DO IT. I promise you won't regret it.
